Do You Need a Tech Whisperer?

Struggling to understand all that techno-babble? Perhaps you need to find a tech whisperer.

Are you struggling to send your first email list, create your first opt-in page, or avoid anything computer related in your business? You are not alone. With hundreds if not thousands of software solutions available, it is overwhelming to know what solution to pick, and then learn how to configure and implement the solution. As a virtual assistant, I witness many of my clients become stuck due to too many options and not knowing how to select the “right” solution.

One stumbling block is feeling confident in understanding “techno-speak” in order to feel confident in the solution selected. Reading the description of features and capabilities online can seem as if you are ready a foreign language. I often find myself slipping into the role of tech whisperer in order to guide clients toward the solution that is appropriate for their situation.

Here is a story to explain the concept.

I remember when my mother was first learning how to use a computer 30 years ago, she was unable to grasp the concepts of opening a file, saving to a folder, etc. She was so used to what she knew a file and folder were, she was not able to translate the concepts into how they related to a computer. One day I sat with her as she typed out a letter on a typewriter. At the same time, I typed the same letter on the computer. With each step she performed, I would relate it to what I was doing on the computer and the associated tech speak. As she took notes, I could see a flicker of understanding. She kept her translation cheat sheet with her for a few weeks, and eventually, she was able to understand the new language and computer concepts. All it took was someone to take the time to understand what she was thinking and help her translate her thinking and guide her to an understanding of the new concepts. As my mom’s tech whisperer, I was able to guide her to understand the new concepts related to computers.

A tech whisperer can play a crucial role in bridging the gap between different perspectives, helping individuals understand and engage with new concepts. They have a knack for breaking down complex ideas into more relatable terms, making it easier for others to grasp the information. Their guidance and influence can be instrumental in navigating challenges, fostering growth, and promoting effective communication.

A good tech whisperer will

1) Understand how you learn best

2) Listen First, Repeat Back

3) Guide you to understanding in relatable terms
