Now is the perfect time to learn something new. Many studies have been done on the effects of learning. These studies have found that people are happier, healthier and that learning keeps your brain sharp. Many people are turning to computer games and websites such as Lumonsity (found at https://www.lumosity.com/) to improve their memory. However in 2014 Dr. Denise Park, a neuroscientist at the University of Texas wanted to find out if brain games or learning a new skill was better to prevent memory loss. His study compared three groups of people and compared their memory skills after three months. The three groups included people learning a new skill, a group of people doing social activities and a quiet group who worked quietly at home on puzzles, games and listening to music. After three months he found that the group who learned a new skill had more gains. "We found quite an improvement in memory, and we found that when we tested our participants a year later, that was maintained," Park says. This year I plan to learn more about building websites and the different website editors available. I also accepted this writing challenge to grow my writing skills. My bucket list of things to learn includes quilting, knitting/crocheting, yoga, and how to build a business the right way. I do not plan to do this all in one year, and some new ideas might strike me and the list will change. The important thing is that I am always learning something new.
So you ask what should you learn? It does not matter, just learn something that challenges you to move outside your comfort zone. Learn to change a tire on a car, learn to sew a pillowcase, learn to paint, or learn a new language. Maybe a friend has a hobby that would love to share with you. Maybe your child or parent has a favorite game they like to play. As Nike says, Just Do It. Now is the perfect time.
