SMARTRRR Goals

Tips for making goals work for you!

As the new year begins, many of us are defining our goals and plans for our business and personal life. Creating SMART goals is a key idea that is used to create plans that will succeed. The concept is attributed to Peter Drucker in the book The Practice of Management and the term is first used by George T. Doran in the 1981 issue of Management Review. Over the years the concept has evolved or been adapted to meet the current trends or industries.   In fact, if you search for SMART goals, you will find articles about SMART goals from companies such as Hub Spot, Mailchimp, and Noom.    As a task and goal-oriented person, I find creating SMART goals easy for me, but sometimes I need just a bit more to achieve that goal.   Eventually, I created the concept of SMARTRRR goals which has allowed me to achieve more of my goals and celebrate my success.

The concept is basically to create a SMART goal and make it SMARTRRR by adding the following 3 attributes.   By defining the three R’s as part of the goal-setting process, there is some additional motivation and inspiration to achieve the goal.

Reward – Remember the commercials after the Super Bowl - “Joe Montana you just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?”   He would say “I am going to Disneyland!”.   There is something to be said about having a reward after working hard for a goal. The more tantalizing the reward, the better.  Some ideas include purchasing new pair of workout shoes after completing a race, indulging in a beauty treatment, or watching a favorite movie.  The reward does not have to be related to the goal however, the reward should be special to you and not something you would ordinarily give to yourself.

Relax – After completing a marathon, runners generally take some time off from their training to let their bodies recover.  I found that my mind also needs some time to recover after focusing on a tough mental goal.  Identify something you find relaxing and document that as something you will do when the goal has been achieved. Ways to relax can include not actively working on any of your goals for a short time, taking a nap, going on a vacation, taking a short walk, or cleaning your desk.  Whatever you select, make sure it relaxing and enjoyable to you.   Sometimes have one activity satisfy the Reward and Relax portions, but always make sure you feel both rewarded and relaxed.   I find spending reading a good book both rewarding and relaxing.

Replan – The final step is to set a date or time frame on when you will begin to set your next SMARTRRR goal.   Without a timeframe, you may just lose momentum and stop making progress.  Block some time in your calendar to review and update your vision and mission, revisit your progress, and create your next SMARTRRR goal!

What tips do you have for setting and achieving goals?  What works for you?  I would love to hear your ideas to help us all achieve just a bit more.
