Is your To Do list never done? Does it seem to grow exponentially every day? You are not alone, over 40% of items on to-do lists are never done. Taming your to-do list can be quite the challenge. But what exactly is a to-do list. I like to view my To Do list in the context of a larger plan and schedule as defined below:

  • Project Plan – The outline of high-level activities needed to complete a project. For example, Building a website might have a plan that states activities such as Design Pages, Write Content, Create Images, Implement Pages, Test Site, Launch Site.
  • Schedule – The timeline when each of the activities needs to happen. For the example, dates of when each of those items needs to be completed would be defined.
  • To-Do List - All the individual steps to achieve the activities in the plan. In the website example, this would be design Home Page, write content for Home Page, implement Home Page etc. The To-Do List should become a list of tasks in which you can easily see a beginning and an end.

For activities that are related to daily life, they become to-do list items in the general plan of living a life of fulfillment. Be sure that you are focusing your daily activities in alignment with your personal vision and mission of life. While daily life is not really a plan, your to-do list helps you focus your time on what is important to you. Think of your to-do list as a way to focus your time, not manage your time.
